Abstract/Contents:"An experiment to assess the effectiveness on turf of a slow release nitrogen fertilizer (Gold-N), started in 1973, was continued in 1974. In general, performance on a turf containing ryegrass, cut at 3/4 in. (19 mm), was better than that obtained on fine turf, cut at 3/16 in. (5 mm). This may have been at least partly due to a continuing problem of pick-up of the Gold-N granules at the lower height of cut. The results for 1974, like those for 1973, showed that a single application of Gold-N at the lowest rate (75 units of nitrogen/acre (94 kg/ha)) did not last the whole season at either of the cutting heights used. The middle rate (100 units of nitrogen/acre) did well until the beginning of August in the trial cut at 3/4 in. and until the middle of September in the trial cut at 3/16 in. One modification made this year was to split the highest rate (150 units of nitrogen/acre) into 2 applications given 12 weeks apart instead of the single spring treatment used in 1973. This greatly improved the performance in the later part of the season and it was a successful treatment on the turf containing ryegrass. In this trial, cut at 3/4 in., there was some residual benefit in April 1974 from the highest rate of Gold-N given in 1973. With Gold-N, although there was some acidification of the immediate surface of the plots during the experimental period, this was less than that found with equivalent rates of sulphate of ammonia."
