| Abstract/Contents: | The functions of turf in landscape construction are discussed and its uses (for ornamental lawns, sports fields, golf courses, roadside verges, embankments, etc.) are listed. Grass species are classified into 3 groups, viz. those which are themselves potential turf grasses, those with particular cvs and types suitable for turf, and those which are unsuitable for turf. The importance of the properties of particular cvs for their survival and suitability in a turf is illustrated by 3 examples from experiments with seed mixtures. Environmental factors favoring particular species are discussed, and on this basis specifications are arrived at for seed mixtures suitable for various turf types in the alpine and lower alpine regions. Finally examples are given of site modification for adaptation to the vegetation cover. |
