| Abstract/Contents: | "The clipping of turf, involving the destruction of a more or less large proportion of the surface plant material, influences the physiological processes in the plants and their stress behavior towards environmental factors. Low clipping results in an increased pollarding and in greater succulence of the plant tissue. Breath of the leaf blades, root growth and root quantity diminish at the same time. Due to a reduction of the carbohydrate reserves along with a lower functional potential of the plant (less surface and subsoil plant material), the clipping generally reduces the tolerance of environmental stress and the turf quality. Due to the fact that the thickness of the surface parts is reduced, the merismatic zones in the area of the pollarding knot and the rhizomes are much more sensitive under high temperatures and dry conditions. Even though level of clipping and frequency of use (especally concretion) work in the same direction, it is more difficult to correlate levels of clipping and resistance towards diseases( observations made in Lusignan do not confirm the information provided in the publications in question). Other qualifications, such as density of sward, growth and preseverance are negatively influenced when the level of clipping is reduced. There is a difference in species and varities as far as the toleration of low levels of clipping is concerned (Especially since breeding is done). This should be kept in mind with regard to the use envisioned." |
