Abstract/Contents:"Four-inch plugs of bentgrass were maintained in control climate chambers at 60°, 70°, 80°, and 90° F., under both ½-inch clipped daily and unclipped management for 12 weeks. Boxes, 16 inches deep, with one sloping glass side, were used to observe and record the rate and characteristics of root growth. The rate of root growth at 60°, 70°, 80° F., was nearly the same, 0.33 inches per day, for unclipped cultures. But, in the rise from 80° to 90° F., the rate of root growth was reduced almost one-half. The most roots were produced at 60° F., and as the temperature was raised, the total weight of roots decreased proportionally. It was observed that the rate of root growth was not constant, but was more cyclic in nature. Eight weekly foliar applications of materials, including glucose, fructose and vitamins have not resulted in any consistent increased root activity under the conditions of these tests."
