| Abstract/Contents: | "The paper reports the response of annual chickweed (Stellaria media), perennial chickweed (Cerastium vulgatum) and 14 cool season grasses, to 18 chemical herbicides. Response of these grasses was studied by making 2 treatments in 18-inch bands across 10 feet wide plots of each grass. Treatments to determine chickweed response were made in 3 series of 1, 2, and 3 applications. Treatments for turf grass response and annual chickweed control were applied in November and December, the final observations were made in May of 1957. Treatments for the perennial chickweed response were made in May 1957 and observations were made in August 1957. Material and pound-rates per acre: Heburon 2; KOCN-MCP 8; DSMA 8; ACP 407 4 and 8; Rohm Haas 450 4 and 8; Simazin 4 and 8; Emid 3 and 6; NH H SO 1 per 100 square feet; CMU ½; 236TBA 2; Alanap 1F 720; CIPC 1; DNRP 1; 4 NaAs2O3 1; 2,4,5-T 1.5; 2,4,5-TP 1.5; 2,4-DP 1.5; MCPP 1.5. Observations: 2,4,5-TP, Neburon, and Simazin showed 100% control of annual chickweed regardless of number of applications, 2,4,5-TP and MCPP showed 100% control of perennial chickweed with 1 and 2 applications. Simazin at both rates killed all cool season turfgrasses. CIPC produced no permanent effects." |
