Abstract/Contents: | "Results of cover establishment and maintenance experiments on steep roadside slopes are reported for five different locations in Virginia. Evaluations to date show that liberal phosphate fertilization with low nitrogen has favored the stands of legumes in grasses. Fertilizers ranging from 1-2-1 to 1-4-2 ratios have produced satisfactory cover, with the heavier rates giving best results. Good sods could not be maintained with one initial application of fertilizer for establishment. Seedling aggressiveness was associated with competition with companion crops and time required for establishing. Ryegrass and cereal grains were severely competitive with perennial sod forming grasses. Fertilizer solutions used in hydro-seeding have caused injury to germination of certain species and have had no effect on others. Heavy mulching often retards seedling growth." |
