Abstract/Contents:"Common Kentucky bluegrass, Merion bluegrass, Park bluegrass, creeping red fescue, Chewing's fescue, Pennlawn fescue, Astoria bentgrass and some mixtures were mowed 3/4 inch and 2 inches high for 5 years. A botanical analysis of the sod was made in September of the fourth and fifth years. Astoria bentgrass completely dominated mixtures in which it was seeded. Bentgrass also spread into plots in which it was not seeded. Merion bluegrass and the red fescues were more resistant to invasion by bent than was common Kentucky bluegrass. The grasses or mixtures were invaded more by bent when mowed 3/4 inch than when mowed 2 inches high. Bentgrass and mixtures and Merion bluegrass and mixtures contained less weeds than the red fescues and Park bluegrass. Merion bluegrass alone and with red fescue survived better than other bluegrasses alone or in mixtures. Pennlawn fescue survived better than common creeping red fescue. The survival of bluegrasses and fescues was favored by high mowing."
