Abstract/Contents:"Solid urea-form is the reaction product of urea and formaldehyde in the range of mole ratios 1.3 to 1.4:1 with an activity index (A. I.) equal to or greater than 40. Comparable products produced under different methods of manufacture may range to A. I. 60. The outstanding features of solid urea-forms are: slow, steady release of nitrogen by bacterial action, and economy of storage and labor of application. Polymer formation ranges from simple methylene di-urea compounds to pentamethylene hexa-urea. Nitrogen is released with increasing difficulty as polymers become more complex. Heavy rates of all solid urea-form have been applied with no damage to turf, with long-lasting and steady feeding. Limited experimental evidence shows that urea-forms can be used to advantage in seed bed preparation when balanced with other essential nutrients. In mixtures with other materials differences in formulations become apparent. The inclusion of urea-form with other sources of nitrogen can be used very effectively to formulate fertilizer products particularly adapted to turf. Certain restrictions as to formulation have to be followed if a high-quality product is to be obtained."
