| Abstract/Contents: | "This paper consists of a discussion of the potash problem based on fundamental research in the field, laboratory, and greenhouse for over 15 years. The origin of potassium in soils, the nature of fixation and release reactions, and methods of reducing potash deficiencies are considered with special reference to turf management problems. These studies indicate that the exchangeable potash does not necessarily have to decrease from spring to fall if the equilibrium situation between available and difficultly available potassium in the soil has been maintained. Balance experiments in the greenhouse with orchardgrass show that, depending on the clay minerals in the soils studied, 400 to 800 pounds of potassium must be added before the crop ceases to remove more potassium than has been applied. The results of the experiment suggest that: (1) Frequent applications of smaller amounts of potash would improve potash status materially; (2) nitrogen should always be applied with potassium under these management practices and particularly on putting greens; (3) when top dressing greens with nitrogen, potash should always be included in the top dressing." |
