Abstract/Contents:"Investigations indicate that several species of nematodes cause damage to Southern turfgrasses either as primary or secondary plant invaders. Most frequently associated with such damage are sting (Belonolaimus spp.), lance (Hoplolaimus coronatus, Cobb), stubby-root (Trichodorus sp.), ring, (Criconemoides spp.), and dagger (Xiphinema spp.) nematodes. Preliminary work on the control of nematodes in established turf using proprietary nematacides was suspended because of the difficulty of correlating nematode population with turf condition. Instead, experiments have been established to study the biology and host relationships of different species of parasitic nematodes on each of four major Southern turfgrasses: bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L) Pers.), centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro.) Hack.), manilagrass (Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr.), and St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze). Cylinders derived from 55-gallon oil drums were inserted in the ground with the top 6 inches exposed. The cylinders were filled with sterilized soil and each planted with one of the 4 turfgrasses. When established one cylinder of each grass in each replication was artificially inoculated with a pure culture of one of the species of parasitic nematodes. This paper reports population trends of stubby-root nematode on each of the four grasses as well as above- and below-ground symptomology of the grasses. Work on this project is partially supported by a grant from the U.S. Golf Association."
