Abstract/Contents:"Continuous measurements of certain plant and environmental factors were made on the Purdue experimental-putting green from June 1 to November 1, 1958. The environmental factors included soil temperatures at 1/2, 1-1/2, 2, 6, 12, and 18 inches; air temperature at 1, 12, and 36 inches; soil moisture at 1, 2, 4, and 6 inches; and light intensity. The plant responses included the root number at 2, 5, 10 and 15 inches; the root color at 5, 10, and 15 inches; the fructose (reducing sugar), nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content of the leaves; and total leaf yield. Nine multiple linear regression-correlation analyses were made each with a different dependent plant variable. These analyses proved temperature to be the major environmental factor that could be used with the most consistancy [consistency] in accounting for the variation in root growth. In two analyses light proved high in ability to predict root activity. Soil moisture was low in its ability to predict root variation in all cases. Results indicated that bentgrass roots mature and die annually or oftener. The rate at which roots achieved maturity was increased under higher temperature conditions. Since bentgrass roots do not live indefinitely, it appears that new roots initiation from the crowns is more important than attempting to maintain the existing roots."
