Abstract/Contents:"Relationships between clipping and fertilization effects on root development of bluegrasses and fescues were studied in soil and solution culture systems. Similar results were noted in both types of culture. Where roots of nonclipped turf were treated at an optimum nutrient level, root growth was slow but constant. A low nitrogen treatment stimulated vigorous root response early in the test, but roots lessened in growth rate towards the end of the run. At a 1-1/2 inch height of cut, optimum nutrient treatments resulted in better root systems throughout. Roots of nonclipped turf grown under low-nitrogen levels were coarse and fibrous, while those produced under optimum nutrient treatments were fine and extensively branched. These differences in root texture were not evident at lower clipping heights. More potassium was accumulated in foliage of clipped turf than where nonclipped. Nitrogen and potassium were accumulated more in leaves, while phosphorus remained more concentrated in roots. Under low nitrogen and low-phosphorus treatments, characteristic deficiency symptoms were observed. Treatments which supplied adequate quantities of a nutrient resulted in accumulations of that element in roots, sod and foliage regardless of deficiencies of other major elements."
