Abstract/Contents:"Fertilizers and seeds are applied together in a solution or slurry with hydro-seeding methods used for highways. The germination of nine species of seed was studied as influenced by time of exposure and concentration of fertilizer solutions. The seed were soaked in solutions of a water-soluble 12-12-12 fertilizer at concentrations of 350 and 700 pounds of fertilizer to 750 gallons of water. Seeds were germinated immediately after soaking and also dried for several weeks before germination. The Kentucky 31 fescue, redtop, perennial ryegrass, Hungarian millet, white clover and red clover seeds germinated satisfactorily when exposed for 15 to 30 minutes at the low concentration of fertilizer. Forkedeer oats showed only a slightly reduced germination when exposed for short periods at the low concentration. Abruzzi rye germination was not greatly reduced by short exposure periods, but was reduced more than any of the other species as the concentration of solution and length of exposure was increased. It is concluded that the hydro-seeding method does not retard germination appreciably when seed are exposed for 15 to 30 minutes to fertilizer solutions."
