Abstract/Contents: | "In June of 1957, a 2-year study was initiated to compare the performance of three soluble carriers (ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate and urea) at rates of 3/4 pound nitrogen per 1,000 square feet every 4 weeks and every 2 weeks; also three insoluble carriers (activated sewage sludge, process tankage, and ureaform) at the above rates plus 1-1/4 pound nitrogen per 1,000 square feet every 2 weeks. A single application of 11-1/4 pounds of ureaform nitrogen was substituted in the series for the low rate of process tankage. Performance was measured by clippings, color ratings, and disease incidence. Between applications the soluble carriers were marked by wide fluctuations in performance. The insoluble carriers resulted in more uniform performance, but were less efficient in total growth and color. The single application of ureaform gave vigorous initial growth, but weakened considerably as the season progressed. The process tankage was most uniform but least efficient. Dollarspot was the only disease to make itself manifest in appreciable quantity. Resistance to this disease increased with increased levels of nitrogen. The activated sewage sludge treatment was most effective in inducing resistance to disease." |
