| Abstract/Contents: | "The use of ripple-sole shoes on putting green turf results in a typical 'ridge textured' footprint which has been the source of much irritation among golfers. Shoes having this kind of sole have been banned at some golf clubs. Preliminary experiments indicate that according to evaluation methods employed in this study, ripple-sole shoes actually produce less permanent damage to turf than conventional spiked shoes. Damage to turf caused by spiked shoes was long lasting because it was accompanied by soil compaction and consequent surface deformation. Attrition to the top growth of the turf appeared to be of lesser importance because such damage in vigorously-growing turf seems to be overcome very quickly. A serious question arises with respect to the adequacy of methods available for the estimation and evaluation of traffic damage. This is an important matter because problems of traffic on turf are increasing. Higher standards of maintenance, the use of more riding-type mowers, the increased use of golf buggies, and heavier use of turf area by foot traffic all contribute to traffic damage." |
