Abstract/Contents:"Laboratory and field tests have been conducted for 6 years for the purpose of determining physical characteristics of soils suitable for use in putting greens. One of the chief demands is that the soil resist compaction. Results of experiments permit the establishment of criteria for evaluating soil mixtures for putting green use. It is possible to use laboratory determinations as a guide in synthesizing mixtures of sand, soil and organic matter which will serve as suitable turf growth media on putting greens. These investigations have covered such matters as the effects of various sizes and proportions of sand particles and the interaction of these effects in the finished mixtures. The mineralogical derivation of the clay fraction of a soil as well as the silt content is shown to be important to the behavior of the ultimate mixture. Physical measurements used are hydraulic conductivity, pore space percentage and distribution, bulk density, moisture retention, and mechanical analysis. Putting green construction must be modified by the incorporation of a gravel 'drainage layer' to create a shallow soil situation. This innovation helps to prevent drouthiness in these highly permeable soils."
