Abstract/Contents:"The influence of chemicals applied for pre-emergence control of crabgrass on the germination and growth of turfgrasses was studied under greenhouse conditions. Seeds of Poa pratensis, P. annua, and Agrostis tenuis were planted in a sandy loam that had been treated at manufacturers' suggested rates with chlordane (50% wettable powder), lead arsenate, calcium arsenate, arsenic complex (with nitrogen), and 2,3,6-trichlorophenyl-acetic acid (Fenac). The turfgrass seeds were planted immediately after application of the chemicals and at monthly intervals thereafter for 4 months. All flats including the areas seeded at later dates were watered as needed. Chlordane drastically reduced the germination of Kentucky bluegrass and bentgrass. All chemicals except lead arsenate and calcium arsenate significantly reduced germination of Kentucky bluegrass, annual bluegrass and bentgrass. However, calcium arsenate somewhat reduced stands of all three grasses. Calcium arsenate, the arsenic complex, and Fenac inhibited germination very little; however, many seedlings turned yellow and died. The residual effect of some chemicals applied for the pre-emergence control of crabgrass indicated that new seedlings in reseeded lawns may be severely damaged."
