Abstract/Contents:"Greenhouse and small plot field tests have revealed that DAC-893 (dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroterephthalate) is outstandingly effective against crabgrass in turf when applied before weed emergence. In four field tests, 4 months after a single application of DAC-893 at 12 lbs. active per acre, 89, 98, 99, and 83% control of crabgrass was achieved. Acceptable control of 87 and 93% was obtained at 6 lb. per acre in two tests. Although the growth of fescues was retarded at the 12 lb. rate in two tests, no discoloration was observed. No injury to bluegrass was noted in field tests, and rates of 48 lb. active in the greenhouse had no observable effect. Germinating turf grass seeds are quite susceptible to DAC-893 as contrasted to established turf. Greenhouse tests have demonstrated that DAC893 is effective against the germinating seed of annual bluegrass, narrowleaf plantain and common chickweed. In a test against crabgrass in soil at high, intermediate and low moisture levels herbicidal efficiency was not affected. There are indications that DAC-893 is less effective in very heavy soils as opposed to light clay and sandy loam soils. Results from field tests for the 1959 season will also be discussed."
