Abstract/Contents:"As part of a continuing study on the growth of turfgrasses, studies were made of the growth of Highland bentgrass, seaside bentgrass, and Alta tall fescue at various heights, frequencies and seasons of cut. Daily mowing resulted in weakening of turf as measured by production of dry matter, chlorophyll reducing substances, etc. The weakening effect decreased as the period between mowings was increased, and became immeasurable at mowing intervals of 4 to 7 days. The weakening was greatest at the season of principal growth and was nil in the winter climate of the California Central Valley when growth was slow. Lower cutting increases the extent of the injury and differences exist among the species. Injury appeared to be associated with the reduction of the mature leaf surface to a small percentage of the total leaf surface."
