Abstract/Contents:"Although bluegrass is widely regarded as the finest lawngrass, there has been little study relating its establishment to interaction between the regional origin of seed, weight of seed, and less-than-optimum conditions. This study recorded germination of both heavy and light fractions of bluegrass seed from five regional sources, under four differing temperature regimens. Results suggest that southern seed, in keeping with its varied genotype, is more 'flexible', adapting to a wide range of conditions; that seed lots vary widely in effectiveness of the light seed fraction, making questionable the fairness of the 'climax' testing procedure; that low temperatures, normally debilitating, may favor southern seed more than northern if alternated with warmer interludes. Graphs are offered in support of these and other contentions."
