Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted to study the interrelationships of phosphorus, lime and aluminum on the establishment of several plant species used for highway turf. Lime and phosphorus rates on an acid mineral subsoil were correlated with plant growth. Seedling weights increased as extractable aluminum in the soil decreased. Lime improved the seedling growth of Kentucky 31 fescue more than for redtop; hence, redtop is more tolerant of aluminum. In the absence of lime, very high rates of phosphorus were required to obtain good growth of Kentucky 31 fescue; lower rates were satisfactory for redtop. This differential response may be attributed to high aluminum tolerance of redtop or differential pH or calcium responses among the two species. The growth responses of Lespedeza sericea and Ladino clover seedlings were similar to those of Kentucky 31 fescue."
