| Abstract/Contents: | "The narrowleaf birdsfoot trefoil, an evergreen, prostrate perennial was studied as a possible lawn component. Seed germinated in dark or light at constant 40° F. after 56 days. At 65° F. night and 75° F. day temperatures, 87% germination was completed after 7 days. Minimum temperature for growth was above 40° F. but below 50° F. Optimum temperature for shoot elongation was 70° F. with a 16-hour day. Low light intensities inhibited shoot growth at low and high temperatures. Growth rates diminished with decreasing soil moisture below field capacity. As available moisture approached 2% at 10 bars suction, growth ceased. Fertilization studies showed that Lotus tenuis was dependent on nitrogen first, phosphorus second, and potassium lastly. Rhizobia inocula hastened growth only in treatments without nitrogen. Salinity tests revealed growth rates to be inversely proportional to salts in irrigation water. Optimum was 20 me/l. Growth continued for 3 weeks at 260 me/l., but ceased after another 3 weeks at 300 me/l." |
