Abstract/Contents:"Studies were conducted during 1958 and 1959 using accelerated wear machine to determine the ability of various turfgrasses to stand up under wear and soil and growth factors affecting wear resistance. The machine, designed and built by UCLA engineers, is power driven and rotates around a vertical axis mounted on a base staked to the ground. It is equipped with two sets of wear shoes which permit simultaneous evaluation of responses to two types of wear. Shoes can be readily changed to permit testing for many kinds of wear. Wide variations in wear resistance among different varieties of grasses were observed. Some of the important factors determining wear resistance which were noted are nitrogen fertility level, soil moisture at time of wear, height of cut, texture and density of turf, and weed invasion. Following wear tests, recovery rates of the turfgrasses were recorded. Several grasses which were highly wear resistant showed poor recovery."
