Abstract/Contents:A series of experiments is described which resulted in the following conclusions. At frequent cutting and playing simulation and an annual N supply of 300 kg/ha, grass production was restricted to < 2000 kg dry matter/ha. Each additional 60 kg N/ha increased grass yield by 190 kg dry matter. Sports turf requires only low P and K rates (about 40 kg P2O5 and 60 kg K2O/ha) if the mowings are not removed and the soil fertility is favorable. The influence of N fertilizer on grass color and sward density declined as the growing season progressed. However, N fertilization in late autumn improved turf quality and root development during the winter. A visual assessment of grass color and sward density showed no interaction between N supply and playing frequency.
