| Abstract/Contents: | "Greenhouse and field comparison of soluble, natural organic and ureaformaldehyde types of nitrogen fertilizers were made. The 4-year effects of repeated, annual application of 4, 8, 16 and 20 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. on Merion bluegrass turf performance and accumulation in soil were studied. The soluble and organic materials gave more total turf quality response than ureaforms at comparable rates. The ureaforms, however, provided more uniform responses. Four pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. per year was found to be sufficient for irrigated Merion bluegrass under the conditions of this study. However, 16 to 20 pounds caused no visual damage. Soil nitrogen levels were increased in the top inch of soil especially from ureaform materials. No differences were found in the 1- to 7-inch soil depth and any increase in the lower soil depths was directly related to the solubility of the nitrogen materials. A practical implication of this study shows that a choice between these classes of nitrogen fertilizer depends upon the relative labor cost of more numerous applications of the soluble or organic materials versus the increased cost of an additional amount of nitrogen in the ureaform formulations." |
