Abstract/Contents: | "Seedling development of four turfgrass species was studied in controlled climate chambers and in field plots. Initial germination was accelerated by higher temperatures, but the highest percentage of germination occurred at the most favorable temperature for continued growth. Tall fescue and red fescue germinated adequately under constant temperatures, but Penncross and Merion needed alternating temperatures for satisfactory germination. Root development generally paralleled top growth, but root vigor was lessened by increasing temperature, or shortening the photoperiod. When seeded at ratios of 0.25, 1.0 and 2.0 of recommended seeding rates, the number of tillers decreased as rates increased. At lower seeding rates the plants were more prostrate. Growing roots were observed by glass-sided buried boxes and plug samples. Roots were more vigorous in fall than in spring. After mowing was initiated, the rate of root initiation and extension was drastically reduced." |
