Abstract/Contents:"In 1954 and 1955, 36 Merion Kentucky bluegrass plots were used in a 3×3×2 factorial design replicated twice. Treatments were: three frequencies of irrigation - three times a week, at incipient wilting (about 20 days), and at one-half the time to incipient wilting; three heights of mowing - 1/2, 1, and 2 inches; and with and without aeration treatments. Aeration treatments consisted of using, four times in 1954, a vertical mower in a manner to remove accumulated thatch and duff from the soil surface. In 1955 the same areas were treated twice with a tool designed to perforate and cultivate the soil surface. In September of each year, the plots were dried and soil moisture was measured periodically from 0 to 20 inches in 4-inch increments. Soil moisture extraction was a function of height of mowing, the 1/2-inch treatment extracting significantly less water in 1954, and 1/2- and 1-inch plots extracting significantly less water in 1955. Significant difference did not result from irrigation frequency in 1954, but in 1955 the frequently irrigated plots removed significantly less water. The aerified plots extracted more water than untreated plots and about the same amount was extracted each year by the aerified plots; whereas the untreated plots extracted much less the second year. Significant interactions occurred between irrigation and the other factors."
