| Abstract/Contents: | "Nutgrass tubers were introduced into soil in which EPTC (Ethyl N, N-di-n-prophylthiolcarbamate) had been incorporated at rates of 4, 8, 12 and 16 pounds per acre. Emergence was noted at biweekly intervals up to 16 weeks. At each biweekly period, tubers were removed, washed and placed in clean soil and noted for emergence. Emergence was inhibited for 6 to 16 weeks with the various rates. Tuber sprouting was not inhibited even at the higher rates; however, the shoots failed to emerge in most cases. Tubers in contact with soil treated at the lighter rates were inhibited in sprouting but very few were killed. Many tubers in contact with the treated soil for 10 to 12 weeks failed to sprout when removed from the soil. However, some tubers remaining in soil for 16 weeks which had been treated at the heavier rates emerged either from the treated soil or later from clean soil. Bermudagrass growth was inhibited or reduced for a longer period than was nutgrass emergence. Field applications of various rates of both emulsifiable and granular formulation of EPTC, when incorporated by tillage, were more effective in killing nutgrass tubers than equivalent rates of the emulsifiable formulation, when applied and leached into soil heavily infested with nutgrass." |
