Abstract/Contents:"Microsporogenesis, megasporogenesis and embryo development was studied in St. Augustinegrass biotypes representing three morphological groups in order to determine method of reproduction. Vegetatively propogated types from introductions and seedling progeny of fertile types collected locally were evaluated in the study. Data on seed sheet, seed viability and growth behavior of open pollinated and selfed progeny were recorded. The results of cytological studies showed three groups based on chromosome numbers. Yellow-stigma types had 18 chromosomes. Four purple-stigma types had 27 chromosomes and one purple-stigma type had 36 chromosomes. Microsporogenesis, megasporogenesis and embryo sac development were normal in the yellow-stigma types. The evidence obtained from cytological studies indicated normal sexual reproduction in the yellow-stigma diploid types studied. Types with 27 chromosomes representing triploids showed considerable variation in the meitotic behavior and high sterility was indicated. The 36-chromosome type exhibited relatively normal meiotic behavior and was highly sterile. The significance of basic cytological information on St. Augustinegrass and its possible application in turf breeding and management are presented."
