Abstract/Contents:"Five turfgrass species were grown in sand and were irrigated with nutrient culture solutions containing additions of 0, 2.0, 4.5, and 10 ppm of boron to solutions containing 0.3 ppm boron. There was no reduction in growth due to boron treatments and there was little or no evidence of boron injury unless the grass went undipped for some time in which case tip nicrosis developed on the two highest boron treatments. In an additional study, six species were grown in nutrient culture solutions in which boron concentration was varied during the experiment. Leaves were cut into small sections and analysed for boron. Boron is accumulated in tips of leaves, older leaves containing more than younger ones. It is apparent that clipped turfgrasses have a high boron tolerance, presumably in part because of boron removal by clipping. By the same token management practices which permit the accumulation of excessive amounts of boron in tissues would be expected to result in growth reduction."
