Abstract/Contents:"Nitrogen uptake from nutrient solution has been studied at six solution temperatures (10° to 60° C.) with six varieties of five species of grass and with three nitrogen sources. Nitrogen was supplied as NH4+ ion, NO3- ion and as urea. Nitrate uptake was favored by cooler temperatures (10° -20° C.), and ammonium uptake by intermediate temperatures (20° -30° C.). The disappearance of urea from solution increased with temperature up to 50° C. Urease within the roots reacted with at least part of the urea with the result that nitrogen reappeared in the ambient medium as ammonium. Ammonium appearing in solution plus ammonium uptake failed to account for all of the urea removed from solution. At a temperature of 60° C. the roots were injured and nitrogen uptake was related to the amount of water transpired. Different grasses had different patterns of uptake. Bermudagrass responded through a narrow range of temperatures; 'Alta' tall fescue grass responded through a narrow range of nitrogen values. The Bentgrasses (A. tenuis and A. palustris) had the greatest urease activity of the species studied."
