Abstract/Contents:"A 7,000 square foot experimental Tifgreen Bermudagrass putting green was established in July of 1959, at the James River Country Club at Newport News, Virginia. Cool-season turfgrasses were overseeded on this area on September 16, 1959, and October 6, 1959. The overseeding rates for 1,000 square feet of the various cool season grasses were as follows: (1) Species belonging to the Agrostis genus at 3 and 6 pounds, (2) Poa pratensis (variety Merion) at 6 and 12 pounds, (3) Festuca rubra (variety Pennlawn) at 12 and 24 pounds, and (4) Lolium spp. (common and perennial ryegrass) at 25 and 50 pounds. The results show that October overseeding was superior to September overseeding. Greater turf density and uniformity of stand were produced with the higher seeding rate. Perennial ryegrass produced the best turf density; common ryegrass and Pennlawn creeping red fescue were slightly lower in density than perennial ryegrass. Pennlawn creeping red fescue had a more pleasing color and less disease than the other grasses. The ryegrasses, especially perennial ryegrass, were poorer in spring color than the other overseeded grasses. Redtop and other bentgrasses were inferior because of slowness in establishment and disease."
