| Abstract/Contents: | "To determine if the turfgrass on golf greens could be physically protected from winterkill (dessication) in late winter and early spring, a study comparing polyethylene (4 mil Polyfilm) and black insulated polyethylene (2 inches of balsa) with unprotected areas was undertaken during the winter of 1959-60. Thermocouples were placed at 2-, 4-, and 6-inch depths and temperatures recorded periodically. When changes in atmospheric temperatures occurred: Soil temperatures under the unprotected plots followed closely; temperature under the clear Polyfilm lagged that of unprotected plots, but was less than one-half that registered by the insulated polyethylene plots. When atmospheric temperatures stabilized for a period of four to five days, the temperature under all plots at all depths tended to equalize. Polyfilm produced a definite 'greenhouse' effect. On clear, sunny days, temperatures at 2-inch levels often were as much as 15 to 20 degrees higher than those at the 6-inch depths. Growth activity under the Polyfilm was markedly accelerated in early April and within 7 to 10 days, growth and density were comparable to that normally expected after 4 to 6 weeks of 'spring' weather. Grass under the nonprotected and insulated plots remained dormant." |
