Abstract/Contents: | "Growth and flowering of Zoysia matrella and Zoysia japonica were studied in controlled temperature greenhouses and growing chambers. Plants were grown under various photoperiod and tempereature combinations. Growth was measured as dry weights of tops, roots and rhizomes and as blade and internode length. Minimum temperature for growth of Z. matrella was found to be approximately 15° C and slightly lower for Z. japonica. Discoloration or chlorophyll destruction occurred at temperatures below the miminum for growth with light intensities of 4000 to 5000 foot candles. Maximum growth occurred at high temperatures and 14- to 16-hour photoperiods. For the environments studied those promoting root and rhizome growth were the same as for the tops. Flower initiation was promoted by short days and high temperatures. Maximum flowering and seed set occurred at the highest temperature (27° C)." |
