Abstract/Contents:"Golf in the U.S. appears to be in an early stage of its third growth period of this century. After twenty years of relative stagnation, participation rates, facility construction and golf equipment sales are accelerating. Participation in golf, is in large measure, a function of facility supply. It is therefore vital that investment in new construction and course revitalization be focused where existing and potential demand is greatest. The best locational decisions will require a thorough knowledge of present and future regional patterns of golf demand. We have developed a data base that includes both the location of existing golf facilities and a series of critical demand indicators. Supply and demand factors have been combined to produce a Golf Geographic Information System (GIS) for the U.S. The system is being used to locate facility deficient areas, and to pinpoint the optimal locations for new courses. Applications to the U.K., European, and Far Eastern markets are now being tested."
