Abstract/Contents:"The history of golf course development in Scotland is described. Five phases are identified. 1) 1750-1900: Courses laid out on natural land surfaces and utilising existing vegetation. A small wooden shed or pavilion for clubhouse. Two hundred courses in existence by 1900. 2) 1900-1920: Mechanically cut tees, greens and fairways. Drainage systems. Substantial stone/brick clubhouse. The growth in suburban golf. The expansion of municipal courses. 3) 1920-1940: The growth of golf-resorts, St. Andrews, Turnberry, Gleneagles, Carnoustie, North Berwick. 4) 1940-1980: Consolidation - considerable expansion in popularity of the game. Increase in pressure on existing facilities both from local players and visitors. Golf still relatively cheap. 5) 1980-2000: New developments linked to world-wide expansion in golf-related tourism and a demand for up-market housing adjacent to golf courses. During phases 1-4 golf was regarded as being an 'environmentally friendly' landuse. Recent proposals for large scale golf-related developments involving the construction of hotels, housing, leisure centres and associated infrastructure have created conflict between developers and conservationists."
