| Abstract/Contents: | "This paper traces how golf originated using the natural characteristics of the land and how courses have conserved wildlife features in the intensively-managed British countryside. It gives figures on the main habitat types occupied by courses in Great Britain, records numbers of Sites of Special Interest on courses in England and refers to courses supporting special wildlife features. It discusses general wildlife requirements in the management of fairways, rough, water courses course margins; and the factors relevant to site selection and design of new courses which will provide mutual support for golf and nature conservation. The paper gives the results of research commissioned by the NCC into these issues and its incorporation into guidelines (published in January 1990) on the wildlife aspects of course design and management." |
