Abstract/Contents: | "Sand filled bunkers are an intrinsic feature of all golf courses. Links courses are fortunate in that many of their bunkers arose naturally in the first instance and so they are generally in environmental equilibrium with their surroundings. If sand levels drop it is usually a simple, and inexpensive, matter to obtain compatible filling material from a nearby beach. Inland courses, on the other hand, have artificially created bunkers which would revert to grassland in a relatively short time if it were not for the efforts of the greens staff. A great deal of time and money is spent in maintaining bunkers and, in many cases, considerable savings could be made by using sand with appropriate physical properties. In this paper an attempt is made to use simple tests to evaluate potential bunker sands, particularly from the point of view of size, shape and origin of the sand grains, permeability, and clay content with the object of improving bunker quality and, at the same time, to reduce maintenance costs. An assessment will also be made of samples of sand taken from various notable courses to see how the properties of these sands fit in with the criteria considered above." |
