Abstract/Contents:"Instruction in turfgrass management in the USA may be obtained at 2-yr colleges and universities offering Associate of Applied Science (AS) degrees or at most land-grant instititutions offering 4-yr Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees. Nothing has been published, however, to compare general characteristics and content of both programs. The objective of this study was to survey both types of teaching programs in the USA to determine respective teaching methods, organization, and topical content. A questionnaire containing 21 questions was mailed in July 1988 to 2-yr (42) and to 4-yr (50) schools in the USA. Only 22 were completed and returned (52%) by 2-yr schools whereas 46 were completed and returned (92%) by 4-yr schools. Course content in both programs emphasized most employment areas in the turfgrass industry. Two-year programs, however, placed greater emphasis on lawn care (34%) and golf course management (30%), whereas 4-yr programs offered a balanced coverage of most employment areas of the turfgrass industry. Respondents from both programs felt that their teaching facilities, libraries, and instructors were adequate to ample, but many had a need for more teaching assistants. Most programs reported major upgrades in their course offerings. In general, laboratories in both programs were organized in a "hands on" fashion in spite of large enrollments in 2-yr programs. Computer software and video tapes were utilized in both programs (80%) along with required reading of current periodicals (74%). The majority of respondents (76%) reported that existing textbooks met their teaching needs. Commonly used textbooks for teaching in both programs were identified. No major differences in teaching methods and organization were found between 2-yr and 4-yr turf management programs."
