| Abstract/Contents: | "Ramets of Lolium perenne from the same genotypes were grown in nutrient solutions of two concentrations. Additional mineral nutrition increased the rate of production of new tillers, the rate of increase in size of tillers and the rate of production of new roots, but not the rate of growth of individual main roots. The genotypes differed considerably from each other in their rates of growth, especially of shoot growth. When the growth-rate of the same population of genotypes was altered by changing the environmental conditions it was found that the lower the mean rate of shoot growth, the greater its coefficient of variation. Variation in the rate of shoot growth, due to mineral nutrition and genetic constitution of the plants growing in a dilute nutrient solution, was accompanied by a similar but smaller variation in the number of roots." |
