| Abstract/Contents: | The construction shortcuts that often lead to problems in USGA greens include the following: 1) mixing topmix components on-site using a rototiller or other mixing device, 2) eliminating the perforated drain title from the base of the green, 3) leaving out the 2-inch to 4-inch intermediate sand layer from the profile, 4) substituting a geotextile fabric for the intermediate sand layer, 5) eliminating both the gravel bed and intermediate sand layer, 6) not having the topmix components tested at all; having them tested at an inexperienced laboratory; or changing suppliers after testing has been done, 7) varying the depth of the topmix or other layers in various parts of the green, 8) not tending to good quality control practices during each stop of construction. |
