Abstract/Contents: | "The effect of the inflated cover used by the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) on the drying of their cricket pitches was assessed using two different techniques. A water balance model using sling psychrometer measurements provided simple and accurate evaporation fluxes. The data showed a range of evapotranspiration from 1.6 to 2.6 mm day-1 depending on environmental conditions. Moisture loss from soil cores collected during one of these periods gave results of 1.7 mm day-1. Data from the soil cores allowed the determination of the spatial variation of drying with different fan orientations. To ensure surface drying, the inflated cover can be used with an external heat source. The cover was assessed under both unsaturated and saturated conditions. The techniques allow environmental control of the playing surface. A saturated pitch can be dried effectively within five days to form a stable surface suitable for football and cricket matches." |
