| Abstract/Contents: | "Since 1963, the national Park Service has used rock salt (sodium chloride) to control snow and ice on park roads in the Washington D.C., area. Before that time, calcium chloride was used. A study was made from March to June, 1965, to determine whether the dead bluegrass turf along the roadsides was due to the use of rock salt. Qualitative chemical tests were used to determine whether the soil and bluegrass roots were contained above normal chloride levels. The correlations of chloride levels with vigor of vegetation indicated that rock salt was the cause of the turf injury and that with increasing use of rock salt more injury could be expected. Chloride levels in the soil were found to be more valuable in determining sodium chloride injury than chloride levels in the roots. However, after the chlorides begin leaching from the soil, it becomes more difficult to correlate excessive chlorides with salt injury symptoms of chlorosis, stunting, and death. Therefore, analyses that are made soon after injury occurs are more accurate." |
