| Abstract/Contents: | Varieties of Lolium perenne, Phleum pratense, Festuca rubra commutata and F. rubra rubra, F. ovina, Agrostis tenuis, A. stolonifera palustris and A. canina canina were sown in pure stands or as mixtures. A dense sward, and consequently a good appearance, was achieved in pure stands or where only a small proportion of other non-sown plants had become established. With mixtures the sward density depended on the tillering capacity of the constituent species and varieties and on the proportions of these in the mixture. The 3 Agrostis spp., which withstood competition and regenerated easily, formed denser turfs when mixed with other grass spp. than they did in pure stands. However, in a dry year turfs containing very competitive varieties of Agrostis suffered from drought, whereas in those containing less vigorous Agrostis varieties, the more drought-resistant Festuca rubra and F. ovina became dominant and the turf retained its good appearance. |
