Abstract/Contents:Sowing methods were studied on alpine sites under extreme climatic and edaphic conditions, on steep slopes and where the soil was disturbed, e.g. by avalanches and falling stones. The most frequently used methods were wet sowing (in which seed, fertilizer and water are applied as a spray, with or without soil ameliorants and sticker) and mulch sowing (where the seed is sown on a layer of straw), particularly the patent Schiechteln method. Wet sowing should be carried out in autumn or spring and is particularly suitable for barely accessible slopes in rocky areas. The Schiechteln mulch method had a greater labor requirement but was well suited for soils affected by drying out, hail or frost. The choice of seed mixtures for particular sites is discussed.
