Abstract/Contents:Eight different turf seed mixtures were assessed, when 4 growing seasons had elapsed after sowing, for their suitability as driving tracks in orchards. In turfs cut infrequently Lolium perenne inhibited other species and prevented the formation of a dense sward even shen it amounted to only 10-15% by seed number of the original mixture. A dense sward was obtained, however, when mixtures of Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra, with or without the addition of a pasture-type Phleum pratense and Cynosurus cristatus, were used, although initial development was slow. A good soil cover was also obtained with varieties of Festuca arundinacea which form a dense sward. After an initially higher proportion in the turf Festuca rubra and Cynosurus cristatus decreased in favor of Poa pratensis and Phleum pratense cv. King. Examples are given of seed mixtures requiring little cutting and producing only a small amount of mulch and those requiring frequent cutting and producing large quantities of mulch.
