Abstract/Contents:"Production of seed for turfs and lawns is a difficult and time-consuming job. The cover crop is not allowed to be too dense, and the seed amount is usually reduced by 30-40%. Nitrogen supply is reduced by 20-30%. This means a lower yield from the cover crop but gives more and better grass seed. Red fescue (Festuca rubra) could be sown either in the spring under straw-stiff spring cereals or in the autumn under winter cereals. 25 cm between the rows is most common. The seed should not be placed too deep, rolling before sowing is necessary. Common Meadow-grass (Poa pratensis) is slow in its establishment and therefore more difficult to undersow. You have to choose a quick-ripening spring cereal. A very good method is to sow meadow-grass together with white clover under spring cereal. White clover seed is harvested the first year and meadow-grass the second and third (possibly fourth). 12-25 cm between the rows. Rolling is necessary prior to and after sowing. Ample amount of fertilizer is necessary. Before sowing 35-40 kg P and 125-150 kg K per ha is recommended. Nitrogen is spread in the autumn, 50-60 kg N per ha, and early in the spring, 50-60 kg N per ha. The grower has to be most careful about weeds. Both spraying with herbicides and handweeding is often done. Red fescue could be combined directly, but meadow-grass should be windrowed to allow after-ripening. Since July 1st 1970 all seed for lawns and turfs has to pass a compulsory control for certification. From June 30th 1973 no other varieties may be marketed than those entered into the Official Swedish List of Cultivars."
