Abstract/Contents:"Smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Schreb. ex Muhl.) is considered one of the most troublesome weeds in turfgrass. There are several preemergence herbicide options available in both granular and liquid formulations. Liquid formulation Quali-Pro (QP) products were compared for efficacy against smooth crabgrass and selectivity in cool- and warm-season turfgrass. Trials were initiated in fairway height perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and non-dormant bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L. (Pers.)) on April 4, 2013. Treatments in bermudagrass were as follows: QP dithiopyr at 280 and 560 g ai ha-1 , QP oxadiazon at 3360 g ai ha-1 , and QP prodiamine at 1120 g ai ha-1 compared to Dimension 2 EW, Ronstar FLO, and Barricade 4 FL at the same rates. Dithiopyr applications at 280 g ai ha-1 received a sequential application of the same rate 7 weeks after initial treatment (WAIT). In perennial ryegrass, all treatments were the same except for the exclusion of oxadiazon. A non-treated check was included for comparison. Injury to the turfgrass was rated 1 week after treatment (WAT). Crabgrass control was rated 3, 4, and 5 months after the initial treatment (MAIT). Oxadiazon injured bermudagrass approximately 40% 1 WAIT, but turf recovered quickly. Dithiopyr injured perennial ryegrass 7% and other treatments did not injure perennial ryegrass. In bermudagrass, crabgrass control was excellent. At 3 MAIT, all treatments controlled crabgrass 96% or better. At 4 and 5 MAIT, applications of dithiopyr at 280 g ai ha-1 , QP oxadiazon, QP prodiamine, and Dimension 2 EW at 560 g ai ha-1 controlled crabgrass 90% or better. Barricade 4 FL controlled crabgrass 88-92%, and QP dithiopyr at 560 g ai ha-1 controlled crabgrass 82%. The best overall control in bermudagrass was dithiopyr at 280 g ai ha-1; both treatments controlled crabgrass 98- 100% at 4 MAIT with a reduction to 91-93% control at 5 MAIT. In perennial ryegrass, crabgrass control 3 MAIT was 100% for all treatments. At 4 MAIT, QP prodiamine controlled crabgrass 82%; all other treatments maintained 100% control. At 5 MAIT, QP dithiopyr at 280 g ai ha-1 and both rates of Dimension 2 EW controlled crabgrass 90% or better. Prodiamine control decreased to 43-78% control and QP dithiopyr at 560 g ai ha-1 controlled crabgrass 86%."
