Abstract/Contents: | The application of fertilizers with an acidic reaction to ornamental and sports turf resulted in a lowering of the pH from 6 to 5.5, a thicker sward, fewer weeds and worms, greater root development, a higher organic content of the soil and a greater top weight of the sward. Alkaline fertilization increased the pH to 6.6, reduced the sward density, encouraged weeds and worms, and decreased the root and top growth of the sward. Acid fertilization favored the establishment of Agrostis tenuis and Poa pratensis, whereas alkaline fertilization increased the percentages of Festuca rubra and Poa annua in the sward. P. pratensis was the most sensitive species to fertilization. Turf damage through drought following acid fertilization appeared to be due to an increase in water requirement of the thicker swrd which developed. |
