| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the importance of maintaining and protecting the environment and states that "historically turfgrasses have been a major contributor to the protection of our environment and the enhancement of our quality of life, particularly in urban areas." Evaluates a number of turf establishment options that includes sodding, seeding, sprigging and plugging. Mentions that sodding provides immediate beneficial effects in the short term: 1) prevents wind and water erosion, 2) requires less irrigation and conserves water, 3) typically requires neither pre- nor post-emergent herbicides, 4) provides instant environmental benefits such as temperature moderation, heat dissipation, glare and noise reduction, atmospheric pollutant entrapment and degradation, water harvesting and recharge, and aesthetic improvement and 5) reduced probability of turf failure. |
